All military moves begin with orders that include your rank, length of service or training, and where you are assigned to help Department of Defense experts determine details of your move. A PCS order means you are assigned to a location for at least 20 weeks for training or work. And a whole move is part of PCS.

Every two to four years is the normal rotation for receiving PCS orders. May 15 to September 30 is PCS peak season.

If you don't have an order yet, dispose of or donate any household items you no longer use for now. Fewer moves is always better! You can also take inventory of your items so you know what you'll need to ship when an order arrives. An accurate and detailed list will also help you file a claim for damage or loss.

Once you're armed with the placement and timing of your PCS orders, you're ready to start planning your PCS move!

Active duty, reservist, or National Guard soldiers and family members registered with DEERS are eligible to apply.

"Military OneSource is like preventative medicine," said Rabbi Rivera, a consultant at Military OneSource in Tennessee. "What I tried to convey to everyone at Fort Campbell is that it's important to get into these things and be proactive, because migration and deployment are big efforts."

"The more organized and knowledgeable you are, the easier and better things will be for soldiers and families," he said.

Rivera recommends setting up a Military OneSource account as soon as a PCS order is received, which allows soldiers and families enough time to determine their individual needs. They can also call the program's hotline at 800-342-9647 for additional assistance.
